5 podcasts for illustrators & designers

I absolutely love podcasts and I listen to a lot of them…Being self-employed and working from home means I have a lot of opportunities to listen to them while working (I also love to listen to podcasts while cooking, running, cleaning…anything really!). I’m also love learning and growing: podcasts are a perfect medium to help me do that. That’s why I thought I’d make a short list of 5 of my favourite art-focused podcasts for anyone that doesn’t know where to start with podcast…or anyone who needs some inspo! Some of these are “old” and popular, some are newer and not as known, but all of them are great and worth a listen. I hope you enjoy this list! I’ll share more podcasts that I love soon.

Creative Pep Talk by Andy J.Pizza

Andy is such a ball of energy and passion. Listening to him kind of feels like going on a rollercoaster ride and being coached at the same time. Whatever you’re feeling as an artist at the moment, Andy probably has an episode to cheer you up or help you out. Andy is an awesome illustrator and he’s always so generous when it comes to giving away his secrets, his process, his work. I think his tips are always on point too so you can really follow his advice and grow as an illustrator.

My favourite episodes (so far): Feeding your creative spark with Lisa Congdon - Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the magic of just hitting record - How to tap into your highest creative self with Morgan Harper Nichols

On Design by Justyna Green

A new addition to my own Spotify, I recently discovered On Design via Jade Purple Brown, an illustrator I absolutely love. This podcast is relatively new but oh so lovely. The host Justyna chats to her creative guests in a really nice and informal way and asks all the right questions. I’m looking forward to listening to new episodes as they come out weekly.

My favourite episodes (so far): Jade Purple Brown - Malika Favre - Kelly Anna

Design Matters by Debbie Millman

I have been a fan of Debbie Millman for years now…I’ve loved her work, her books and of course, her podcast. Debbie has interviewed amazing people, true design legends but not only. She’s interviewed writers, musicians, actors, directors…She’s interested in creativity and soul-searching. The way she interviews her guests is always so delicate yet forth-coming. Debbie always asks the right questions: she does a crazy amount of research and knows exactly how to get her guests talking honestly about their work and their lives. If you only have time for one podcast, make it this one!

My favourite episodes (so far): Elizabeth Gilbert - Kate Moross - Paula Scher - Adam J. Kurtz - Ashley C. Ford

Clever by Amy Devers & Jaime Derringer

Clever is also a podcast that I have been listening to for years. I love that there are two hosts, Amy and Jaime. It makes everything so dynamic and entertaining. They also always interview really interesting designers and artists and have the most fascinating conversations with them. I’ve learned a lot listening to Clever! You’ll also love this one if you’re particularly interested in design.

My favourite episodes (so far): Lauren Hom - Jessica Hische - Bobby Berk (from Queer Eye!) - Abbey Lossing

Illustration Hour by Julia Dufossé

Another more or less recent addition to my creative podcasts, Illustration Hour has proven really educational and entertaining. With a focus on illustration, Julia has interesting conversations with up and coming illustrators. I always love hearing from other artists about their work, their process and of course, what’s up behind the scenes. You’ll like this one if you prefer more intimate and chill conversations about what it’s like to make a living as in illustrator.

My favourite episodes (so far): Haley Tippmann - Marylou Faure - Eleanor Taylor - Thomas Danthony

I hope you loved this list! Let me know below what you think of those :)
